There are a few things that unite Nigerians – Music, Comedy, and Sports. The national pride came out to play on Sunday, January 26 as we waited for Burna Boy to bring home the country’s first home-made Grammy.
The frenzy could only be compared to one thing: a world cup win. Social media and traditional media were all interested in talking about one thing, Burna Boy’s possible Grammy win. If Burna had won, he would have been the first home-based, home-made Nigerian musician to win the coveted global prize.
He was nominated in the ‘Best World Music Album’ category for his fourth album, African Giant. He, however, lost the award to Beninese singer-songwriter, Angelique Kidjo who dedicated the award to him. The other nominees in the category included Altin Gün, Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet, and Bokanté And Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley.
Although Burna Boy did not win the Grammys this year, he is the first Nigerian to have been nominated for three global awards in the same year. For his brilliant works in 2019, he received nominations for the Grammys ‘Best World Music Album’, BET Award for ‘Best International Act’ and the MTV: EMA ‘Best African Act’.
After Angelique Kidjo was announced as the winner, Nigerians took to social media to still sing praises of Burna Boy, calling him the ‘African Giant’.
