Chidinma, Timi Dakolo, Niniola and other Nigerian artists that have competed in music reality shows

3

Long before Big Brother Naija had Nigerians glued to their TV screens, there were other reality competition shows that were loved – Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Idols West Africa, MTN Project Fame, Maltina Dance All and others. Nigerians were hooked on other reality shows.

And just as Big Brother Naija creates stars out of its contestants every season, music competition shows like Idols West Africa and MTN Project Fame gave Nigeria some of the stars in the entertainment industry today.

Idols West Africa (popularly known as Nigerian Idols) was the West African franchise of the international Idols series created by Simon Fuller, following the success of the series in other parts of the world. The singing competition debuted in 2007 with ten contestants, but it unfortunately was short lived with only two seasons.

MTN Project Fame had a successful run for nine seasons. The music reality show launched in 2008, and was hosted by Joseph Benjamin and Adaora Oleh. Winners of the competition were entitled to cash prizes, vehicles, and production deals. And also end up becoming ambassadors for the telecommunications company MTN.

These shows have produced some big names in the Nigerian music industry.

Omawumi – Omawumi was a contestant on Idol West Africa in 2007. She contested alongside Timi Dakolo and was the first runner up in the competition. Omawumi impressed the audience and the judges with her powerful vocals and has since the competition become a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

She has since released three albums and won the 2009 Headies Best Vocal Performance award for her hit single ‘In The Music’.

Timi Dakolo – The ‘Iyawo mi’ singer appeared on Idols West Africa in 2007 and emerged winner of the competition. While in the competition, Timi was consistently in the lead and it came as almost no surprise when he finally emerged victorious in the competition. Dakolo released his debut album Beautiful Noise in 2011 and has continued to build a successful career for himself since.

In 2019, the singer signed a Virgin EMI record deal and released his first album under the label, Merry Christmas Darling. The album featured collaborations with British singer-songwriter Emeli Sande and Grammy awards winner Kenny G. Some of Dakolo’s famous hits include Iyawo Mi, The Vow, Wish Me Well, among others.

Chidinma
– Chidinma Ekile first appeared on the third season of MTN Project Fame in 2010. She won the competition as well as a cash prize of N2.5 million naira and a production deal. She released Chidinma, her debut studio album in 2011 that featured producers including Cobhams Asuquo, Tee-Y Mix, WazBeat and Oscar Heman Ackah.

Later that same year, Clarence Peters directed the visuals to Jankoliko, her single that featured Sound Sultan. In 2012, she released Emi ni Baller with Illbliss and Tha Suspect under CAPital Hill Records, which won the 2013 Headies award for Best Pop Extra Video.

In 2012, she won the Best Female West African Act at the Kora Award. She has appeared on several stages and performed in numerous countries across the world – Republic of Benin, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Cameroun, Equatorial Guinea, Niger and Ghana.

Iyanya
– Iyanya won the first edition of the MTN Project Fame competition in 2008 and started out his career. He released My Story in 2009 after the competition, but it was in 2013, after the release of Kukure which was accompanied by the Etighi dance, a cultural Calabar dance that Iyanya hit national recognition.

In 2014, he won the Headies Artist of the year award. His album Desire and his hit single Ur Waist were also nominated in the same year. In 2016, Iyanya became one of the artists signed to the Mavin record deal. In 2018, he announced that he was now signed to Temple Music.

Niniola – The Maradona singer started off as a contestant on the sixth edition of MTN Project Fame in 2013. In 2014, she released Ibadi, her hit single produced by Sarz. It wasn’t until 2017 that she received wide acclaim for the release of Maradona. The single earned Nini nominations at the 2018 BET Awards and SAMAs.

In 2019, Niniola’s Maradona was sampled in Beyoncé’s ‘Find Your Way Back’, a song off her soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift. Nini is also credited as one of the track’s songwriters and composers.

In April 2020, she received her Grammy nomination certificate for her work as a composer on The Lion King: The Gift. The singer known for her energetic live performances, has released hits like, Designer, Boda Sodiq, Omo Rapala and others.

Praiz –  in 2008, Praiz came close to winning the first Edition of MTN Project Fame against Iyanya, coming second place. Since the competition, the R&B singer has released ‘Rich and Famous’ ‘Sisi’ and ‘I Love You’.

He combined forces with Bez on his 2011 single, ‘That Silly Song’, which made a world premiere on BET’s 106&Park.

In 2014, Praiz released his Rich & Famous album and in 2015, he won the Nigerian Entertainment Award for Best Pop/RnB Artist of the Year.

Praiz has been associated with acts like Wizkid, Chidinma, Seyi Shay, Cobhams and others.

Ayoola Ayolola – in 2012, Ayoola won the fifth edition of MTN Project Fame. He has transitioned from music into acting, since 2015, he has been appearing as Mide in the Ndani web series Skinny Girl in Transit. He has also featured in drama series The Men’s Club and landed roles in movies like – The Bling Lagosians, Isoken, If I Were President and others.

Mercy & Ike: How Mercy Spent Her BBNaija Prize Money and Other Things That Happened on the Show

3

The Mercy & Ike show is an Africa Magic reality TV show that follows two former BBNaija housemates (Mercy Eke and Ike Onyeama), who fell in love after meeting on the show. The Mercy & Ike show details their love story after the BBNaija house.

Mercy & Ike

Here are some major things that happened in the third episode of the Mercy & Ike show:

1. Mercy had to go to the hospital

This was pretty shocking to Promise and to Ike as well, because Mercy has always been very healthy. According to Ike, Mercy has not had to visit the hospital before now.

After running some tests, the doctor told her she needed to get some more rest, drink water, and eat better. Ike promises to be there for Mercy and take better care of her. Promise, on the other hand, says that Mercy sometimes forgets to eat because of how busy she is.

2. Mercy just wants to be taken care of

Mercy nearly breaks down in tears as she thinks over what the doctor has said. According to her, life can sometimes get overwhelming because of all the responsibilities she has to deal with. She acknowledged that she must be strong for herself and the people around her, but sometimes she just wants a break so she can relax and let someone else take care of her for once.

3. Ike’s family sent him a car!

On a video call with his sister, Cindy (who Ike describes as the family member who understands him best), Ike mentioned that his family sent him a car containing some of his belongings that were still in the United States. They discussed the costs of clearing the car from customs, which were pretty high.

In his conversation with her, he also mentioned that appearances and endorsements have been paying the bills for him and he did not expect that things would work out as quickly as they have when he was returning to Nigeria.

Mercy & Ike

4. Mercy spent her BBNaija prize money on a real estate investment

During the show, Mercy goes for a meeting with her legal team and they discuss her real estate company – Lambo Homes. Her lawyer is already incorporating the business name at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

At this point, Mercy reveals that she has always been interested in real estate even before she got into the BBNaija house. After winning, she invested her prize money into real estate, and now, she is excited about the prospects of her new company.

5. Mercy inspires Ike to work harder

Ike is getting some endorsement deals that are helping him secure the bag as well. During the show, he talks about his latest partnership with an online mall, and how he’s looking forward to working with them.

In a conversation with his friend, Magnito, Ike talks about Mercy being such a hard worker and how she inspires him to work harder at what he does as well.

6. Promise doesn’t want Mercy to move in with Ike

Mercy has a heart to heart talk with her older sister, Promise, and tells her about wanting to move in with Ike. Promise says that she loves Ike and his family, but that she thinks that Mercy is being hasty about this decision. According to Promise, Mercy and Ike can’t move in together because they are not yet married. She advises Mercy to use this time to get to know Ike better.

Promise also reminds Mercy that their mother and siblings will be visiting them soon and it would be awkward to have Ike living with them when they are not married.

7. Mercy plans a solo trip to London

Mercy is trying to rest as the doctor ordered, so she’s planning to take a vacation. Unfortunately, Ike can’t join her because of his busy schedule, so will Mercy end up going to the UK by herself?

Ike is slightly jealous because they had been planning to go on a trip together, and because he thinks Mercy might meet some old flames while she is there. On the other hand, he reassures himself with the knowledge that Mercy is committed to him.

In the teaser for the next episode, it looked like Ike and Mercy were having a major argument because Mercy threatened to smash Ike’s car!

You can catch up with all the gist and drama of the Mercy & Ike show every Sunday on Africa Magic Showcase Channel  151 at 6:30 pm. You can also catch repeat episodes on Mondays on Africa Magic Urban, DStv Channel 153 at 9:30 pm.

Judging Matters Episode Three: Relationships Fail Because of a Lack of Trust

3

In episode three of Judging Matters, counselor Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Justice Olusola Williams dealt with two cases.

I wonder why all these cases have to do with money and trust issues.

Judging Matters

Case 1: Tochukwu Anyansi Vs Ikenna Ana

Tochukwu, a jeans distributor, had in August 2018 given on credit 150 pairs of jeans worth N440,000 (N2,800 per jean) to Ike, a jeans retailer whom he had known for about three years to sell.

Both had done successfully done business three times before It took Ike about one year to pay Tochukwu N340,000 with a promise to balance the remaining N100,000 between December 2019 and January 2020, but Ike failed.

Ike, who returned to Nigeria from China to do business in Nigeria in 2016 agreed he was owing Tochukwu N100,000 but claimed that things have been tight for him as the market is ‘dull’.

After much probing by Ebuka, Ike further explained to Justice Olusola that though he promised to pay back the money he owed between December 2019 and January 2020, he sent the money and some other cash he had to China for the supply of some goods but because of the coronavirus pandemic, the China market is not open.

This, he says, explains why he has been unable to pay back.

Justice Olusola Williams in her ruling announced a N100,000 judgement for the claimant, Tochukwu Anyansi because Ikenna Ana had lied, and as a matter of fact, Ikenna had taken Tochukwu for granted, because he had the money but decided to play a smart one on Tochukwu by investing the money in his other venture before paying pack.

Judging Matters

Case 2: Mary Bundu Vs Henry Apoede

Mary, a stylist, and Henry are both tenants in the same compound with about 20 others. For over 2 years, from 2017, Henry had given Mary an inflated PHCN bill of  N3,500 every month.

Other tenants in the compound paid between N1,300 and N1,500 monthly. The tenants in the compound share one metering system, so when PHCN brings the monthly bill, it is apportioned to all tenants.

In December 2019, Mary had a festive season break from work, and on a certain day she had the chance to meet Mr. Uche, another tenant, and as they discussed, Mr. Uche told Mary he had been paying N1,500 monthly for electricity, and even showed her his receipts.

Mary thereafter confronted Henry on why she was paying that amount while others paid less but Henry had no specific reasons as to why.

In the courtroom, Henry told Justice Olusola Williams that he apportions the bill based on how long people have stayed in the compound, and Mary was the newest tenant. While other tenants had stayed in the compound for eight to fourteen years, to Mary had lived there for only four years. Henry had stayed there for twenty years, which is why the landlord made him the caretaker.

It was clear to the court that Henry had been unfair to Mary, having charged her N2,000 extra for 28 Months. In her ruling, Justice Olusola Williams insisted that henceforth Mary should begin to pay the same fees as the other tenants, and also announced judgement for the claimant, Mary in the sum of N56,000.

Trivial issues in the courtroom you may say, but I kid you not, If you have not been watching Judging Matters on Africa Magic Showcase, you are missing a lot of the excitement and education on how the justice system works.

Judging Matters airs on Mondays at 6:00 pm on Africa Magic Showcase CH 151.

For DStv Compact subscribers, MultiChoice is offering you up to 44% in upgraded viewing when you pay your DStv Compact subscription, this means you get upgraded to Compact Plus and you do not get to miss the magic and excitement on Africa Magic Showcase. DStv #ThereForYou

MI’s Beef With Vector And Other Celebrity Beefs We Want To See Settled On Judging Matters

3

Judging Matters is Africa Magic’s new reality  TV show where small-scale conflicts are resolved at no cost to the Litigants in a civil manner. The show is hosted by media personality and lawyer, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu alongside retired judge, Justice Olusola Williams.

 Judging Matters

The entertainment industry is fraught with fights or ‘beefs’ and it would make for a good showing to see them get squashed on this new show. These are some of the industry beefs that we’d like to see settled on Judging Matters.

MI versus Vector

MI and Vector are arguably the biggest ‘non-street’ rappers of their generation. For many years, their fans pit them against each other. And for a long time, the pair managed to limit the tension between them from spiraling into verbal attacks. But as much as they tried, the tension eventually evolved into ‘call-outs’ and ‘diss tapes’.

In 2019, the tension hit a high with both rappers releasing diss tracks like Vector’s ‘The Purge’, and ‘Judas The Rat’; and MI’s ‘The Viper’. We wish they’d settle their issues and come together to release great music that will be unrivaled for generations to come.

Toyin Abraham vs Lizzy Anjorin: Toyin Abraham and Lizzy Anjorin’s fight was probably the messiest feud of the Nigerian entertainment industry in 2019. It started with Lizzy’s accusation that Toyin created fake accounts to troll her.

It only came to a halt after a 500-million-naira lawsuit was issued and a request for an investigation by the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency had been made. The fight is on hold right now, but it is nowhere near finished.

Tonto Dikeh vs Churchill: If someone was handing out prizes for messy divorces, Tonto Dikeh and Churchill will get the award for the ‘Messiest Divorce Ever’. The estranged couple got married in 2015 and were divorced by 2017.

However, since their divorce, they have continued to embarrass each other on social media by trading words and accusations. The fight came to a head with Churchill filing a 500-million-naira defamation suit over an interview his ex-wife granted.

 Oyemykke vs Tunde Ednut

Oyemykke and Tunde Ednut have been at each other’s throats for years. Oyemykke has claimed that Tunde Ednut shares fake news about him, and he has hurled insults and bigger accusations at the singer and Instagram blogger. The beef does not look like it will be ending anytime soon, and they may need legal intervention.

 Paul vs Peter Okoye

The twin brothers formerly known as P-Square first broke up in 2016, then made up in 2017. They released two songs before breaking up again. Their issues have ranged from uncooperativeness, disagreement on the powers of their manager and older brother, and life threats.

While it is disappointing that fans no longer get quality music from the group, it’s even more disturbing that their relationship as twin brothers has been destroyed. They need intervention as soon as possible to help fix the broken bond.

Do not miss the next episode of Judging Matters on Africa Magic Showcase Channel 151 on Mondays at 6:00 PM. You can also catch the repeat episodes on the same channel on Wednesdays at 10:00 PM.

How A Brief Romance Between Clarion Chukwura And Sir Shina Peters Gave Nigeria Its Leading Video Director

3

In 1982 when Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, met Clarion Chukwura, Sir Shina Peters as he was popularly called, was already making waves in the Nigerian music industry. He was, as he describes himself, ‘the founder and pioneer’ of Afro juju music in Nigeria.

In 1982, SSP had already released three albums, three years in a row, Way to Freedom (1980), Freedom (Senwele) (1981) and Money Power (1982).

However the Afro juju’s rise to fame was fraught with challenges. As a young boy he rebelled against his parents and turned his back on education, claiming that he wanted to become a musician. Not in agreement with his decision, his parents gave him an ultimate, return to school or risk homelessness. He chose the latter and left home. He revealed in a 2018 interview on his 60th birthday,

‘I woke up at 2 a.m one day and I told them (my parents) I was not going to school; that all I wanted to do was play music. But because of my decision not to go to school, my parents woke up everybody in the house that night including the landlord…’

When SSP left home, he had nowhere left to go but the streets. He recalls that he once lived with a prostitute who when she saw him roaming the streets, took him in.

‘When I left home, I went to Temiogbe Motel, Oshodi. I can remember, a prostitute then called me and I was living with her. She would lay her wrapper on the floor for me to sleep on. For weeks, I was with her. So, it happened that the woman kept her money under the pillow but she forgot it was under the pillow and she now said I took the money.’

Peters’ passion for music drove him to becoming an apprentice under Chief Ebenezer Obey.

‘I also served as a house boy to Ebenezer Obey. Things changed for the better for me when I met Ebenezer Obey. I used to go to his place to clean his clothes and shoes. Whenever he was not at home, I would play his guitar.’

Peters’ soon joined General Prince Adekunle’s band, where he formed an alliance with Segun Adewale. The duo formed the Shina Adewale and the Superstars International band and that was how SSP’s career started. However the band soon went moribund with Peters and Adewale going their separate ways in 1980.

Way to Freedom, Shina Peters’ debut solo album was released the same year.

In 1982, Clarion Chukwura, was studying Acting and Speech in the Department of Dramatic Arts in Obafemi Awolowo University (then University of Ife) under Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.

Born in Lagos, the actress moved to Ibadan to pursue a career in acting at fourteen. Clarion who discovered her passion for acting at an early age, was supported by her father in her interests. She however lost her dad when she was about eleven years of age.

‘I was born in Lagos and remained there till when I was 11 years old. From the age of 11 to 14, I stayed in Aba and Onitsha. I came to Ibadan when I was 14 and lived there till the age of 19. However, I lost my father at the age of 11.

This incident completely shattered me. My father was the centre of my life and when he died, everything just fell apart. That was the beginning of a different chapter of my life.’

In 1982, the understudy was cast in Money Power, a movie by veteran filmmaker Ola Balogun. Young Clarion only got cast in the role of ‘Yemi’ in Money Power, after her performance as ‘Moji’ in Camwood on the Leaves, a play written by her professor, Wole Soyinka. Unknown to Clarion, Ola Balogun was in the audience and was taken by the young actor’s showmanship.

The role of Yemi had earlier been cast to a different actress, but by a stroke of fate, Ola Balogun shuffled the cards and Clarion ended up with the role that would change her life forever. In 1982, Clarion was an impressionable aspiring actress of 18, just crossing the corridors of adulthood.

In 1982, on the set of Money Power, the movie, the paths of Clara Nneka Chukwura and Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, then 25, would cross.

SSP was cast alongside Clara in the movie and this would be the beginning of a whirlwind romance between the two.

This relationship would lead to the birth of their son, Clarence Abiodun Peters. Clarence was born in 1983, to his 19-year-old actress mother and his 26-year-old afro juju father. The co-stars were unmarried then and continued to remain so. The relationship between Peters and Clarion would end just as quickly as it began.

Clarion Chukwura and Sir Shina Peters

At the time of the whirlwind romance between Peters and Clarion, Sammie Ayoka, who Peters will eventually marry, was already in the picture. In 1982, Shina Peters and Sammie Ayoka celebrated their traditional marriage and eventually had their court wedding in 1995.

Shina Peters and Sammie Peters

In 1983, Shina Peters was only six years shy of the Ace (Afro Juju Series 1) album with his band Sir Shina Peters and His International Band. The album that would go double platinum, usher Shina Peters into the hall of fame of Nigerian artists and seal Afro Juju as a genre of music to reckon with.

He would also release Shinamania (Afro Juju Series 2) in 1990, which would win him the AfroJuju musician of the year award and draw millions of fans to him.

In 1983, Clarion already won the Best Actress award in Burkina Faso at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival in 1982 and was a year away from featuring in Mirror in the Sun. Mirror in the Sun is the soap opera that would crown the actress a Nollywood sweetheart and bring her from stage plays and small movies, onto the Big screen.

Shortly after the birth of her son in 1983, Clarion joined the University of Ibadan Performing Company and also became a part of Tunji Oyelana’s band “The Kenneries” as a back-up vocalist, leaving Clarence with her mother.

Clarion will feature in the Nollywood blockbuster “Egg of Life” alongside Nkeru Sylvanus and Georgina Onuoha. Over the course of her career, she would appear in more than 200 movies like, Caught in the Act, Fiery Force, Yemoja, Forbidden Choice, Glamour Girls and several other movies. The iconic actress has won several awards in the course of her remarkable career, including the Afro-Hollywood Best Actress Award for her role in Glamour Girls in 1997.

The actress became a United Nations Special Peace Ambassador in 2007, for her humanitarian efforts in Nigeria, Cameroon and Kenya.

After her relationship with Peters ended in ‘83, Clarion got married to Tunde Abiola, younger brother to philanthropist politician, MKO Abiola. The marriage ended in 2003.

She later got married to popular socialite Femi Oduneye, in 2004. That marriage was also short lived, as the couple got separated in 2006.

In 2016, Clarion then 51, got married to her third husband and current husband, Anthony Boyd in the United States. Safe to say that actress didn’t let a few heartbreaks stop her from getting her happy ever ending.

It is no surprise that Clarence Abiodun Peters, who was primarily raised by his mother, an actress and who is also the son of a musician, will take to entertainment. At barely seven years old, Clarence was already featuring in movies like Amin Orun, Jokotade by Sola Sobawale, Family Circles among others.

Clarence, unlike his parents, would take his art behind the scenes and become a video director, cinematographer and filmmaker. He studied cinematography in City Varsity in South Africa and upon his return to Nigeria, co-founded and became the CEO of CAPital Hill Records, a record label that represents acts like iLLBliss, Tha Suspect, Chidinma and others.

He is also the CEO of CAPital Dreams Picture, a motion picture production company.

It is no secret that Clarence is one of the most sought after video directors in Nigeria. He has directed music videos for some of the biggest and the best names in the Nigerian music industry – Wizkid, Banky W, 9ice, P-Square, Choc Boys, 2 Baba, Naeto C, Mode 9, Goldie Harvey, Sound Sultan and a host of others.

Clarence, like his parents, has several awards to his name. In 2010, he won the Headies award for Best Music Director for his work in “Finest” by Knight House (featuring Sauce Kid and Teeto).

In 2012, he also won the Nigeria Music Video Award for Best Cinematography for Chidinma’s Kedike. He won the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2014 for Best Video among several others.

Mercy & Ike Season One Episode Three: The Price You Pay For The Life You Choose

3

So, we were all anticipating the cliffhanger from last week’s episode on the Mercy & Ike show, as to why Mercy needed to visit her clinic, and now, we’ve gotten some answers!

Mercy & Ike

Mercy woke up feeling down and decided to pay a visit to her doctor. Her sister, Promise was worried because she had no clue what could possibly be wrong with Mercy and waited for her to return with feedback. After Mercy’s doctor ran some tests, it turned out that all she needed to do was get some rest and drink a lot of water.

Ike had a conversation with his sister, Cindy over the phone on how he’s getting his life back together and how their parents sent him a car and other items from the US through his uncle. Come on, a car! Wow.

The siblings also spoke about how their dad needs Ike to document how much he’s making and spending. They both found it funny. I mean, I’m sure we all did too. Ike also confided in us, the viewers about trying to get booked and not expecting his path to fame to go from ‘0 to 100’ real quick when he decided to move back to Nigeria.

Mercy gave Ike the lowdown from her trip to the clinic and he was a bit surprised because he’s never known her to be the type to go see a doctor. He threw in a cute comment, saying he doesn’t know what he would do without her. Awwwn!

Promise heard back from Mercy and mentioned that her sister works very hard, she’s a strong woman and she needs to take care of herself. Mercy broke down saying she “just wants to relax and be taken care of”, she also thinks she worries about everyone else apart from herself but now she needs to take care of herself too. Poor Mercy, I would like to think we understand how she feels.

Mercy got a call from her lawyer, Chidjoke, reminding her about her appointment at his firm. Mercy eventually made it down there and spoke about her real estate business, ‘Lambo Homes’. She mentioned her passion for real estate and how she now has the means, platform, and funds to carry it out. We were informed that she put some of her winnings from Big Brother S4 towards building her dream company and venturing out to places around and beyond Africa.

Ike visited Motive Mall with his cousin, Ikechukwu for his video shoot. Whilst they were there, Ike told his cousin about Mercy’s health and how he would like to visit her after he rounds up with the shoot. Boyfriend material over here!

Having conversations with siblings can be comforting, and Mercy had a heart to heart with her sister, Promise about Ike. Promise thinks Mercy doesn’t need to rush into anything due to pressure and shouldn’t commit simply because she’s excited. She also needs to chill and think about what she’s getting herself into, for example, if there are things herself and Ike can’t tolerate, they should cut it off.

Mercy went on to ask Promise about moving in with Ike and Promise straight up said she doesn’t think they should move into together because they aren’t married. Plus, since Ike has a place she can get here to visit. Mercy took in her sister’s advice and after thinking about it for a sec, she said her mum can’t be in one room while she and Ike will be coming out of another.

Mercy and Ike struggled with putting one’s priority over the other. They have been trying to go on trips together in the past, but work always comes in the way. Mercy felt like she needs to go on holiday based on her doctor’s prescription to rest. Unfortunately, Ike won’t be able to join her due to his schedule clashing with hers. He seemed distraught about the situation and Mercy insisted he should try and see if he can cancel he’s engagements.

At this point, Mercy traveled to London without her other half, and Ike met up with his friend, Magnito who had a few things to say, such as the video he saw of Mercy landing in the UK as well as a video of her with Wilie XO.

Ike and his friend had a laugh about it and went on to discuss people’s opinions, how Ike felt about not going with Mercy, her seeing one or two people he doesn’t want her to see, not seeing anyone as a threat to their relationship but he cannot be too sure, how Mercy is expensive and whoever the guy is will be spending an arm and a leg as well as how Mercy could have split her winnings 50/50 if she wanted to be nice.

Would you split yours?

Ike went on to tell his friend that he knows how hard she grinds to make more money as well as encouraging him to do the same. I believe we all need someone to push us beyond our limits.

Ike spoke about an issue that concerns some cultural differences. He mentioned that if he and Mercy were in the U.S, they would be living together, own businesses together, etc. but the Nigerian mentality messes that up as well as family.

I’m sure you all can’t wait to see what drama unfolds in the next episode of the Mercy & Ike show because I simply can’t. You better tune in every Sunday on Africa Magic Showcase Channel 151 at 6:30 pm and watch out for the repeat on Mondays on Africa Magic Urban, DStv channel 153 at 9:30 pm.

How The Coca-Cola System Is Lending a Hand On The COVID-19 Frontlines

3

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt our way of life with its attendant changes, many have been left far vulnerable to the pandemic’s effects, especially those who have contracted the virus and have been quarantined, so also nurses and doctors on the frontlines helping nurse these patients back to health.

Coca Cola

A common thread here is that both healthcare workers and patients are subjected to isolation and a considerable amount of mental stress in the process. In an interview with UNICEF in early April, Dr. Uzezi Emuophedaro, a well-known medical practitioner expressed her fears regarding the rising spate of COVID-19 cases. Fast forward to three weeks later, and these fears have unfortunately manifested, with the number of confirmed cases in Nigeria currently over 3000.

Fortunately for health workers overwhelmed by the situation, the pandemic has presented an opportunity for individuals and corporate organisations to rise up to the occasion by showing support to those in need. Two weeks ago, Coca-Cola sponsored “One World: Together At Home” – a global initiative organised in partnership with Global Citizen, focused on celebrating health workers on the frontlines across the world.

The Coca-Cola System, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), has also remained incredibly steadfast since documented cases of the disease began to peak. To combat these harrowing developments, the Coca-Cola System has consistently provided relief materials to health workers and patients. Recently, donations comprising numerous cases of water were provided to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and prior to this, NBC and Coca-Cola Nigeria made beverage donations for hydration and refreshment of patients and healthcare workers at Isolation and Treatment Centres across Nigeria.

Coca Cola

As part of efforts to also support the Nigerian healthcare system, the Coca-Cola Foundation recently made a significant donation through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), by providing personal protective equipment to workers on the frontlines. These efforts will not only mitigate the attendant effects of the pandemic on communities but will also assist in reducing the current patient saturation at Isolation Centers across the country.

Without question, Coca-Cola’s commitment to providing relief to Nigerians during this peculiar time runs rather deep. Recently, its associates through its community drive, raised collective resources to feed Nigerian families struggling to stay afloat. The initiative, named the #CokeCares Food Support Programme, will directly address the needs of a sizeable number of families in Nigeria.

For spectators, these gestures might be well within the status-quo, but for those on the frontlines, it is a reassuring pat on the back – one that signifies consideration and appreciation, an indication of solidarity as we all come together with one voice to battle the current ravaging pandemic.

What Are The Options For Entertainment Brands Post-COVID?

3

I grew up in a very small town in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. Growing up, my family was one of the very few on our street who had a television set and a VCR. What this meant was that every Sunday, our living room was filled to the brim with neighbours and their children who gathered to watch whatever new home video my father brought back from his latest trip to Aba. The rest of the crowd who couldn’t fit into our small living room resorted to fighting over themselves to watch from the windows. I can’t count how many curtains we had to either mend or replace as a result. This was my earliest introduction to Entertainment and the lengths people would often go to consume it.

Over the years, the footfall to our windows gradually dropped, not because entertainment became any less important to our neighbours, but because a lot of them could now either afford to buy a TV set or found other more convenient means of accessing entertainment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has effectively disrupted life as we know it, and one of the most hard-hit sectors is the Entertainment Industry. According to Forbes, projections are that the global industry will lose about 10 billion dollars in revenue when all of this is over. And that is no surprise. The pandemic and the resultant lockdown around the world has meant that major streams of revenue for the industry and its players have taken a hit. Productions have been shut down; concerts, tours and festivals have been put on hold. The doors to cinemas and nightclubs in most parts of the world have been sealed shut, and are likely going to remain that way for a while.

The future of entertainment post-covid
Nigerian pop star, Davido performing at the O2 Arena in 2019. Like many other artistes, the singer has had to cancel his 2020 tour as a result of the pandemic.

But, now more than ever, demand for entertainment is at an all-time high. Social/physical distancing means consumers are -in TikTok lingua- bored in the house and in the house bored. The copious amount of leisure time people now have on their hands and the uncertainty of the pandemic have everyone turning to entertainment for respite. Where footfalls to outdoor entertainment have tanked, online-based entertainment has witnessed a hike. The Multichoice owned streaming service, Showmax reportedly saw a boost of up to 50% at the onset of the lockdown. Netflix has had to crunch bandwidth in some parts of the world as a result of increased demand. The streaming giant recorded a whopping 15.7 million new subscribers in the first 3 months of 2020, according to its Q1 2020 report.  Instagram Live is another medium that has experienced an astronomical leap as a result of the lockdown; It’s almost as if the purple circle bubbles at the top of our Instagram TL didn’t exist before now.

The future of entertainment post-COVID
Instagram Live is experiencing an astronomical leap as a result of the lockdown.

So what happens when all of this is over? Are people going to abandon the entertainment consumption habits they’ve picked up during their time indoors once “the outside” opens? I don’t think anyone actually knows for sure but one can wager that it would be a long time before things completely return to normal.  For all we know this is the new normal. Therefore, it is time the industry –– all the different spheres of it –– went back to the drawing board. Even if we get the all-clear in the next couple of weeks or months, it can no longer be business as usual. The pandemic has opened people up to new ways of doing things, and consumers’ eyes to new and arguably safer, more convenient and cost-effective ways of accessing entertainment. Brands who supply this entertainment can not afford to be left behind. There’s ultimately going to be a shortage of entertainment supply if brands do not unlearn and relearn everything they knew about content production and distribution.

DJ D-nice’s “Club Quarantine” on Instagram Live has shown us that we don’t necessarily need to be in a club packed full with tens and hundreds of sweaty people to have a good time on a Friday night. Canadian rapper Tory Lanez’s controversial “Quarantine Radio” has served as a viable alternative to strip clubs. MTV Shuga is currently airing a pan-African series entirely self-shot by the actors from the comfort of their homes in four different countries. Over 3 million people tuned in to Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Music For Hope’ concert on YouTube, again, from the comfort of their homes.  Almost every young person with access to a phone and working internet is creating video content on TikTok and racking up thousands of views.

tHE FUTURE OF ENTERTAINMENT POST-COVID
MTV Shuga’s latest pan-African series was entirely self-filmed by the actors.

In 2020, you no longer need a full production studio to turn out good content, you no longer need to have all your cast and crew in one place to produce content, you no longer need a physical audience to stage a concert. Heck, we’re throwing birthday parties and having full-blown wedding ceremonies on Zoom these days. Things are changing and they are changing quite rapidly. Only the brands who are quick to adapt will survive the aftermath of this pandemic.

Yes, entertainment is always going to be central to our lives as human beings, it is that thread that holds us together when every other thing seems bent on pulling us apart. However, where and how people consume it won’t always be the same – the gradual drop in footfalls to our windows in Umuahia showed me that much and so has this pandemic. Entertainment brands have two options really: either get with the times or get left behind.

Judging Matters: A Learning Curve for Everyone

3

After watching the second episode of Judging Matters, I knew for sure this was not just going to be an entertaining show but also an informative and educative one.

Judging Matters

Here is what I could make of the previous episode:

I’m sure most of us have encountered some very shifty real estate agents, who will boast about what they can offer you when searching for decent accommodation yet go off-script even after giving them a clear brief on your choice of the apartment.

I have had similar experiences of exploitation, such as having to you pay a retainer and yet be charged for their logistics. After all that commitment, they continue to take you to unsuitable locations, and when you think things through, you’ll begin to wonder if there’s any shred of honesty is left in human beings.

It’s sad how money can either make you or mar you. The last episode said as much. In this episode, a lady sublet a shop she had previously paid the rent on to her friend for free. After her friend had spent money on renovation, it was discovered that the shop was part of a settled family dispute and that she had to vacate that shop.

The plaintiff, however, insists that her friend, the accused, deliberately made her spend money to renovate the place knowing there’s contention on the property. Do bear in mind that the plaintiff had been friends with the accused for 15 years. In this case, the years of friendship did not count, and their friendship is at stake.

Judging Matters

What about the supposed landlord? Does he go without blame? Is it so easy to let go of friendship of 15yrs because you have a preconceived notion that your friend didn’t tell you the truth?

I was very impressed with the way the cases were judged, and fair is just the word to describe it.

In the first case, there was a brief chat between the judge and the counsellor. It was clear that the agent was in breach, and had failed to honour his end of the bargain. Yet, he was insisting that the woman wait till he finds her another apartment. I am sure he wasn’t listening when she mentioned she had contracted another agent who had found a more decent accommodation to her taste.

The second case was too easy and looked ridiculous to everyone. The plaintiff had not done her due diligence and insisting that her friend who helped her without taking a fee must take the fall was pointless.

I am so looking forward to the next episode! You can tune to Africa Magic Showcase Channel 151 on Mondays at 6:00 PM to catch the unending drama on Judging Matters.
