Twitter Celebrates Democracy Day With #ImagineANigeria Tweets

Yesterday was the first time Nigeria as a nation celebrated Democracy Day on June 12 in honour of MKO Abiola who won the annulled presidential election that held on June 12, 1993.

Nigerian Youths in like manner took to Twitter to celebrate their nation’s democracy the only way they know how. They did this by saying all of the things they hope the future holds for the nation. They did this using the hashtag #ImagineANigeria along with their wishes.

Here are some of the most heartwarming and in some cases, funny tweets people shared.

We can only hope that at some point all of these wishes will become the reality of our country.

The Democracy Day celebration which held on Wednesday at the Eagle Square, Abuja, had none of the previous Presidents and Heads of State present. Their pavilion at the ceremony was conspicuously empty throughout the ceremony.

However, members of the President’s inner circle – Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, as well as Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, were in attendance.

Former Heads of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Yakubu Gowon, and Ibrahim Babangida were absent along with Ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

Luckily, heads of state from other African countries attended the event.

The presidents that were present at the ceremony included President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President George Weah of Liberia, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo, and President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

Other Presidents around for the celebration were President Macky Sall of Senegal; President Adama Barrow of Gambia; President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic; President José Mário Gómes Vaz of Guinea-Bissau and President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic.

June 12 is going to be the official Democracy Day for the country from now on.
