Meet Made Kuti – The Next Afrobeat Star



Omorinmade Kuti, first son of Afrobeat legend, Femi Kuti and grandson of Music Icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was born to a long line of talented musicians. Popularly known as Made, he joined his father’s band, ‘Positive Force’ in 2018 and is already gearing up to become the next afrobeat star. 

Here’s all you need to know about Nigeria’s next afrobeat star:

  1. He was born on September 26, 1996.
  2. He is the first son of Femi Kuti.
  3. He started playing with his father at the age of 5 at the African Shrine.
  4. Made started to tour when he was eight years old and has toured countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.
  5. He hated being in secondary school because all he wanted to do was learn about history and music but they didn’t teach either in his school.
  6. Just like his grandfather, he attended London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire Of Music and Dance to study composition.
  7. Made Kuti describes his chosen genre of music as Afrobeat and a mix of other genres.
  8. His favourite place to perform is the African Shrine.
  9. Made is working on an album and it is expected to drop sometime this year.
  10. Despite having grown up at the African shrine, Made Kuti does not smoke.
  11. He believes that musicians should approach music from an intellectual point of view, rather than a materialistic one.
  12. He plays the drums, bass guitar, trumpet, piano and the saxophone.
  13. He had a piano teacher growing up who taught him to play but he learned how to play the saxophone from his dad.
  14. He taught himself to play the bass guitar, drums and trumpet.
  15. To relax, he watches speeches by black icons like Malcolm X and drama series and plays Fifa.
  16. Philosophically speaking, Made has no fears but he is afraid of certain animals.
  17. His dad’s sister, Yeni Kuti is his favourite relative.
  18. He isn’t paid as much as some of the members of ‘Positive Force’ despite being Femi Kuti’s son because there is a hierarchy to the band.
  19. Made Kuti is not an atheist but he also doesn’t practice any religion.
  20. He considers himself to be a Pan-Africanist
  21. If he wasn’t a musician, Omorinmade would be an astronomer or a physicist.
  22. Some of his musical influences include – Coltrane, Miles, Oscar Peterson, Chopin, Stravinsky and Bach.
  23.  In a few years time, Made hopes to have released two albums, put together an Afrobeat orchestra and started touring.
