Kevin Hart Has A Netflix Special. Don’t Watch It If You Haven’t

Kevin Hart is easily the biggest comedy act in the world right now. He has sold out stadiums and mega arenas. His movies have grossed several hundred millions of dollars and his production company has produced some of the Internet’s most beloved content. The man is a signed Nike athlete (with his own running shoe and a non-athlete), has an underwear company and a vitamin supplement company. In the world of business and entertainment, Kevin Hart might as well be Tony Stark. At least, that is what his latest Netflix documentary “Don’t Fuck This Up” promises to give us a glimpse of.

But you shouldn’t watch it, if you haven’t yet and I’ll tell you why.

Repackaging what we already know

I’m a fan of Kevin Hart. I like his stand-up and some of his movies. His come-up story really resonates with me. In fact, his early specials got me through very difficult times in my life. I’m also inspired that he works so hard despite having so much – it’s not an easy thing to do. As the highest-earning comedian in the world, he is obviously very business-savvy and that is why he is repackaging public information as a new thing for his audience, which is intellectually dishonest on his part.

The documentary series focuses on Kevin’s complicated relationship with his father and the two major scandals that have rocked him in the the recent past: losing out on hosting the Oscars and cheating on his pregnant wife. It also focuses on his relationship with his closest friends and the business arrangements that keep them all together.

But none of this is new. He talked about his relationship with his father as early as his very first special – 2009’s I’m a Little Grown Man. We already knew it was a complicated relationship. Same goes for his scandals – the news cycle did not rest until it exhausted every possible angle of Kevin Hart’s latest public mess. As for his buddies/business partners, anyone that knows the basic things about Kevin Hart knows who the Plastic Cup Boyz are. He also talks about their brotherly relationship in his specials all the time!

Why is this material out if it doesn’t necessarily tell us anything new or anything at all? The stand-up tells us something new, the movies show us different skills and capabilities but what does this documentary tell us? And that brings me to my next point.

It is unnecessary

There are two reasons for this: As a fan I didn’t get the point and as a first timer on Kevin Hart content, my friend whom I watched it with couldn’t finish watching the series because she kept losing interest. It doesn’t cater to the current fanbase and it doesn’t appeal to a new fan base. So who is this for exactly? Why has Kevin Hart collaborated with Netflix (the biggest streaming service in the world) to release a six-episode documentary that doesn’t tell fans anything new nor is the content good enough to make potential fans want to jump on the wagon.

Unnecessary.

At the end of the day, it’s a matter of taste and some people just like mindless stuff like this. That’s a fact and if you are one of those people, that’s okay. That brings me to my next point which is really a theory.

This documentary is a test for similar content

If you didn’t know, Kevin Hart was in a major car accident that nearly killed him in September 2019. He was bed-ridden for months and has to undergo multiple surgeries. My theory is that this documentary is to test the waters, gauge audience reaction and what not against content around his car accident. In fact, some footage alluding to the car crash was used in the trailer for Don’t Fuck This Up. Don’t waste your time watching it and just wait for the next special. Or movie. Or whatever else that grown little man decides he wants to conquer.
