2019 has been a pretty major year. The beauty world had quite a bit of drama. There was a lot of Bratz Doll makeup looks, skincare moments and a whole lot of makeup. However, while many things have entered our lives, it’s time to say goodbye to others. That’s the thing about trends, they don’t last forever. I’ve curated a list of trends that I feel should just stay in the last decade.
Matte skin
Over the last few years matte makeup has been huge; matte skin, matte lips, matte brows. But with the return to a more natural makeup look and the increasing popularity of skincare and our obsession with glass skin, getting that glow is what it’s all about. Scrolling through Instagram all we can see is lips dripping in gloss and that dewy look just gives such a healthy glow.
Over baked Face
Self-proclaimed cake faces, we never thought we’d see the day when we’d be swerving the cake face for a more natural look. But as the no-makeup makeup look becomes more and more popular, we’re seeing less and less heavy contouring and more subtle bronzing, in the new decade let’s just be a little more light-handed.
Smokey Eyes
In 2010, we became obsessed with the sultry, smokey eye. We dubbed the various colors of dark eye shadows using shades of purple, navy blue, and sometimes even glitter. Although this became one of the top makeup trends of 201 but it’s time to let it go.
Heavy Foundation
There needs to be an end to heavy foundation that make you look lighter, an overall toning down in the severity of brows and eye shadow trends. Don’t get me wrong we’re still applying the same layers of makeup but we need to use the right shade. Lighter foundation is not cool. You simply want to look like a better version of yourself and a Lighter foundation does not do that for most people.
Heavy Eyeliners
In the early part of 2015, there was no such thing as “too much” eyeliner. People just just lightly lined their upper or lower lids, you can most likely paint thick, dark lines. Fortunately for our eyes, heavy eyeliner began to trend out after a brief moment in the spotlight. But people fail to realize it’s not for everyone you need a specific eye shape and precise application so it doesn’t look too harsh.
Heavy Contouring
In the new decade, you may start to see another way to contour your face. a graphic highlighter on contour would just do it.In ten years’ time, heavy contouring may become very ugly, that’s why it is important to drop it now. Lastly blending the contour and highlight is very important, most of you just pour it in and brush of without blending properly. That is clearly havoc.
Multi color lips
Ombre Lips as it is popularly called, can be beautiful but yet not so good depending on the shape of your lip. Dripping Lip glosses are the trend now, so why do you want to have a purple and nude lipstick all at once in one lip. It’s time to wish the ombre Lip ‘felicia’.
Thick Brows
As much as softer brows are taking over now, thick brows was once popular. Yep, in 2012-2017 this super fierce look was in. By the end of the year, many makeup artists were calling for the makeup trend to be done away with. There’s no dimension to the brows; it makes the skin look too bold and most times artificial.
Wavy Brows
This trend started in 2018 and some make up artists hopped on this trend. I mean why would you want to step out with a wobbly brows on your face. As crazy as it seems and some of you might have forgotten. It was a trend and of course with no further ado is time to RIP to this trend.
Heavy Eye shadow
Eye shadows became one of the hottest makeup trends of the decade. Looking back, it’s hard to say what we liked about these colors but we liked them nonetheless. Having an array of colors on the eyes was something everyone wanted to at least try out. These days, though, you probably wouldn’t want to be caught dead wearing too many colors of eye shadow.
The last decade was full of self-acceptance, 2020 will definitely be the year of self-expression. So, while exploring colors may be on the rise, the opportunity to be unapologetically yourself and express your creativity in any way you want has arrived. 2020 Is all about expressing yourself, and makeup is your weapon.
