Alagba Adebayo Faleti; iconic theatre practitioner, playwright, journalist and poet dies at 87



At the ripe old age of 87, Alagba Adebayo Faleti has passed away in the early hours of today Sunday 23rd July.

While details are still sketchy, the news was confirmed to us by Tunde Kelani who is a filmmaker and was close to Alagba Faleti.

‘I heard the news myself so I called Ibadan and his family confirmed it. Well, we thank God for a life well spent. He was 87 and he lived a fulfilled life’, he said.

Born on 26th December 1930, Adebayo Faleti was a renown theatre practitioner whose career started in 1949. After founding his own theatre group, he went back to school earn a diploma from the University of Senegal and a degree from the University of Ibadan.

He also had a long television career on the old Western Nigeria Televison (now NTA) and the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State.

The younger generation would know him best for his works on movies such as Saworoide and Thunderbolt.

He is also credited for translating the Nigerian National Anthem into Yoruba language.
