Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney will be suspended for United’s match against his boyhood club Everton this weekend after picking up his fifth booking of the season. England’s all-time top scorer was shown the yellow card for dissent in the 54th minute of United’s EFL League Cup quarter-final against West Ham last evening when he reacted impatiently after being penalised by referee Mike Jones for a foul on West Ham midfielder Edimilson Fernandes.
This means that Rooney will miss out on a return to Goodison Park as well as the opportunity to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 249 goals for Manchester United. Rooney was also furious due to the fact that the referee took no action against Winston Reid after he was caught in the face from the New Zealander’s boot which gave him a cut on the cheek. Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho (who watched the match in his office after receiving a one-match touchline ban for showing improper conduct a few hours before kick-off) came out in defence of his captain stating that Rooney had every reason to feel disappointed about the booking, claiming there was no contact between him and Fernandes.
Nevertheless, Rooney’s booking did not make much of a difference to United as they swept past West Ham 4-1 to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup with both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial scoring a brace. The Red Devils will now take on Hull City in the semi-finals while the other semi-final features last season’s runners-up Liverpool and Southampton.
