Barcelona plan to compete with Liverpool to sign £52m-rated star: report - originally posted on Sportslens.com
Barcelona could compete with Liverpool for the services of Timo Werner, suppose they are unable to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan this summer, a report from Mundo Deportivo claims.
The Blaugrana are aiming to sign a new striker during the next transfer window, who can act as a long-term replacement for Luis Suarez up front.
Martinez has been identified as their prime transfer target but they face a stumbling block as the Nerazzurri may be reluctant to accept anything less than the £102m release clause in the striker’s contract.
As a result, the Catalan giants may look elsewhere and Mundo Deportivo reports that Werner has emerged as the ‘Plan B’ option to bolster their centre-forward department this summer.
Unlike Martinez, Werner is available for a cheaper price due to the reported £52m release clause, though the forward has the preference to join Liverpool this summer.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been heavily linked with the Germany international in recent months but they have yet to make a formal approach to land his signature.
It has recently been suggested that they are assessing the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and are likely to delay their move for the 24-year-old.
Should the Reds decide against the deal, that could open up the Blaugrana’s prospects of signing the former Stuttgart graduate.
Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in the German, who has bagged 27 goals and 12 assists for Leipzig across all competitions this term.
