How Nigerian Celebrities Are Using Their Status During This Pandemic

These are not the easiest of times for entertainers. The pandemic has effectively put a stop to tours, concerts & gigs which are most of these guys’ primary source of income.

It’s being projected that the global music industry will lose as much as 5 billion dollars to the COVID-19 pandemic. Same as the movie industry.

So, it’s quite commendable that a number of them are choosing to look beyond their own troubles to offer help & hope to other people, as well as creating awareness on the coronavirus with their platforms.

Let’s take a look at how some of our faves have been using their celebrity status and platforms during these times, shall we?

Wizkid

Bar a few tweets and retweets, The Starboy has mostly been scarce since the lockdown was announced but that is no surprise considering that he’s been ‘social distancing’ even before COVID-19.

Don Jazzy

By the time all this is over, Jazzy may possibly be more popular for his TikTok videos than the tons of hits he has made. His hilarious videos have been a much-needed comic relief in these times. He’s also been giving away cash gifts to his followers on social media.

Banky W

When he’s not cuddling with Susu, Mr W is sharing information from the NCDC & updates on measures his company is taking to flatten the curve. He was one of the first entrepreneurs in Nigeria to enforce the WFH policy while also adequately compensating his staff.

Davido

OBO currently has his hands full caring for his son in the absence of his fiancee, who was quarantined after testing positive to COVID-19. When he gets a few spare minutes, he makes sure to keep his followers updated on Baba Olowo’s donations.

Runtown

Okay, can we talk about how totally inspiring Runtown has been! Whether he is posting pictures of himself at home or doing cash giveaways on Twitter to support people in need, the singer has shown us a side of him that we weren’t accustomed to before now.

Toyin Abraham

Morethan a lot of her peers, Toyin Abraham has been quite vocal and committed to creating awareness about the coronavirus, sharing tips and information every chance she gets.

Yemi Alade

Do You know who else has used her “celebrity” quite well during this pandemic? Yemi Alade! Yemi has educated and entertained us in the same breath while also doing her part to check the government when necessary. She recently teamed up with the legendary Angelique Kidjo for a home acoustic performance of their hit “Shekere” and we’re still not over that performance! Also, is this a good time to mention that Shekere has garnered over 6 million views on YouTube?

2Baba

He hosted an e-concert to support the cause to minimize social gatherings and get people to sit their asses at home. Yeah, you may argue that he was paid for it but I mean, the hustle is the hustle. And you can’t knock him for killing two birds with one stone!

Mr P

One half of the now-defunct music group, PSquare has been playing Santa on social media too, blessing fans with cash gifts, with a dash of thirst trap.

Burna Boy

While a number of his peers have dedicated their time, resources and talent towards the fight against COVID-19, Burna has decided to face an entirely different fight. The African Giant has spent a good chunk of his time fighting Nigerians for one thing or the other.

Naira Marley

Like Burna, Naira Marley has also been picking the wrong battles and has gotten into trouble with the law too.

D’banj

He is working with Bank Of Industries on a quick and viable solution for the Creative Industry in these times. On the side, he tweets motivational quotes like the one above.

Bovi

In true funnymen fashion, Basketmouth & Bovi started a series about life and business in the Coronavirus era. The first part of the series has all of us cracking up and looking forward to the next one(s).

A special shoutout to IK Ogbonna who has been on all the major IG Live concerts, especially Quarantine Radio with Tory Lanez, uncontrollably waving the Nigerian flag.
