It’s been well over a year since Sinzu finished serving a 2-year jail time in the US and the veteran rapper has been making impressive moves to reclaim his spot in the music industry.

Nigeria’s entertainment industry landscape is fickle, so the wordsmith formerly known as Sauce Kid has his work cut out if he’s to attain the pinnacle of success he so desires after a long time away from the scene. Whether the talent is there is unquestionable.

Here are some impressive ways the rapper is orchestrating his return to the music industry.

Telling His Story

Sinzu is without a doubt one of the best storytelling rappers out of Nigeria. His earlier studio projects (Money Long: The Mixtape and African American) were filled with many gems showing his storytelling prowess. This is a formula that works well with music fans and rappers who have had their fair share of run-ins with the law – 2Pac, DMX – have used this formula effectively. Even Naira Marley released his biggest song of his career so far, Soapy by telling a grim tale of his short stint in EFCC’s camp.

Sinzu is also telling his story in interviews and through other mediums. He has gone on record to say he earned $16 a month working in the jail kitchen. In his third post on Instagram following his release, Sinzu reminisced on his time in prison.

Stressing daily, waiting to get sentenced, nothing but men around me… hellafied (sic) drama ready to brack off at any time. Had to hit the shower with shoes on just Incase it went down right then and there. Nothing to do but wait for something to happen … This was when I started to work out 5 times a day, every week,” he wrote, before ending the emotional post with a resounding statement.

“Lesson learned. Never goin back,” he said.

Covers / Jumping on Trends

Sinzu is no stranger to this formula. Since returning home, he has jumped on a handful of popular songs and has shown he’s still sharp on the mic. He has recorded his versions of the viral ‘Fvck You’ challenge by Kizz Daniel as well as Chinko Ekun’s ‘Able God’. In fact, he has recorded and released arguably the best cover of Mayourkun’s ‘Geng’.

Social Media

No one should be told this in 2020. Even Will Smith has made sure he stays on the lips and faces of millions of fans across the world by making social media his playground. Sinzu, with over 50,000 followers on Instagram, has the clout to triple his fanbase before we’re done with the first half of 2020. He’s made the smart move of associating with Davido’s 30BG team and he’s posting frequently.

Releasing New Music

Since his return, Sinzu has not been sulking and wallowing in regrets. He has dusted himself up and set his eyes on the goal by releasing new music. He has a new song out with Yung6ix titled ‘HNIC’ off his 2019 album, Better Late Than Never. He also made a smart move by collaborating with Zlatan, one of the new leaders of street music.

In fact, the video of the song with Zlatan which was released two weeks ago, ‘Zanku Zu’ has earned Sinzu his highest number of views out of all 68 videos on his official YouTube channel. The song, as of today, has 79,000 views, with the closest being the remix of his hit, ‘Yebariba SwaGGa’ (70,000 views) 12 years ago.

What He Can Still Do

Davido

Of course, it’s a no brainer that Sinzu should jump on another record with OBO. Their previous collaboration, ‘Carolina’ is still popular among music fans so another record together would be a masterstroke.

Naira Marley

Sinzu can sneak in a collaboration with viral sensation, Naira Marley while he’s at it. The rapper has shown he has his ear on ground and is willing to work with newbies. He already has a record with Zlatan, but he’ll do well to tap into the cult-like following of the dreadlocked ‘King of No Mannaz’ by adding him to his list.

We wish him all the best!
