Reminisce To join Falz In AMVCA Hall of Fame

Unlike in markets like the US where musicians often cross over into Movies and remain successful, Nigeria has historically been much less forgiving of a career switch between art forms. But times have changed. A new crop of multifaceted talent has exploded in the last decade or so and we’ve seen rapper Falz criss cross between music and acting successfully over the years, occupying a unique space all by himself.

But that could change soon and rapper Reminisce is the one looking most likely to join Falz in that exclusive club. Alaga Ibile, as he is also known, is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 2020 AMVCAs for his performance in the Kemi Adetiba-directed King of Boys. In the film, the rapper plays “Makanaki”, a political thug plotting revenge against his underworld overlord turned politician Alhaja Eniola, played by Sola Sobowale. The movie is Reminisce’s first ever role in a feature film. He is also nominated for Best Sound Track as he is featured in the title soundtrack for the KOB movie, along with producer Sess.

In his Instagram and in interviews, he has joked about originally declining the role and even though it has so far been his only role, Reminisce’s performance in King of Boys suggests great potential on the silver screen.

Just as he went from selling second hand shoes to becoming the first Nigerian rapper to chart back to back on the Billboard World Music chart, Nollywood could be the rapper’s new stomping ground. A bonafide talent, Reminisce is one of the most underrated rappers in the business.

Despite being independent, for the most part, Reminisce has been able to remain in the mix with pop culture and music. His latest single, Instagram, which features pop sensation Naira Marley and fellow rapper Olamide, has been a hit on radio and in the clubs. As a lyricist, he is tried and tested – listen to his first album Book of Rap stories or his last album El Hadj and it’s all there. As a businessman, his Samsung and Orijin deals speak for themselves and as a family man, he has been scandal-free.

In the Best Supporting Actor in a Movie category, the rapper is up against Richard Mofe Damijo (Seven), Ramsey Nouah (Living In Bondage), Nkem Owoh (God Calling) and Pascal Tokodi (Disconnect). While he goes up against Larry Gaga/Flavour (Living In Bondage), Ighwiyisi Jacobs (God Calling), Mercy Aghedo (The Gift) and Timzil (Run) in the Best Sound Track category.

The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) will hold on March 14, 2020 in Lagos and on that day, we might just have another musician who has taken great acclaim on the other side of the pond.
