Every year, there is usually that one country that Nigerians make their favourite spot. These destinations have changed over time. It has been South Africa, Bali, Zanzibar, Santorini. Dubai has been a crowd favorite for a while now.
Whether it’s a destination wedding or a getaway, Nigerians love to travel. The trend usually starts with several celebrities, and pretty soon everyone is showing up in these spots.
Last December, Ghana had the “Year of the Return” that saw a mass exodus to the West African country. In spite of this, Nigerians still found some new spots to visit. Cape Verde was one of them.
Cape Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is a Portuguese speaking African island country. It is an archipelago – a cluster of islands, it is basically an island that contains several islands. It consists of 10 major islands and eight smaller islets. Cape Verde has a small population of about 540,000 people, and a mixed heritage of European, Arabs, African and Moorish descendants.
The island sits in a very interesting position, though it is on the African continent, it still feels foreign with its Portuguese history and language. Cape Verde offers a lot to do, whether it is lounging on one of its several beaches, surfing, walking or hiking. The island offers a peaceful getaway from the hustle of life and I can imagine why it will be a favoured spot for Nigerians. Cape Verde is bordered by Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and Senegal.
Unlike Dubai, Paris, Bali, which are major tourist spots in the world, and draw a lot of crowd, Cape Verde is a relatively unknown island, with a small people population, but a lot of beach and island spaces. One of the islands on Cape Verde is Fogo, which is Portugese for fire, a volcanic island, with incredible sites.
The official currency for Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE). The Naira to CVE exchange rate is not very high with 1 CVE being 3 Naira, this is encouraging because it won’t cost an arm and a leg to visit this country and actually have fun.
The Cape Verde diet will not be very strange to Nigerians, consisting mainly of corn and beans. rice, fried potatoes, cassava and vegetables, fish, meat, chicken and eggs.
The island is also a really nice spot for a romantic getaway, proposals, weddings and anniversaries. Whether it’s a solo trip to reconnect with yourself or a romantic vacation, or maybe it is a group trip, Cape Verde certainly has something for everyone.
Nigerians may be tired of the dry arid air and endless desert sand of Dubai and are ready for soft sands, beaches and sea salt. Cape Verde will definitely be seeing a lot more of Nigerians.
