#NETThrowback: Highlife Homage – An Oliver De Coque Playlist



Born Oliver Sunday Akanite in Ezinifite, Nnewi South, Anambra State, Oliver de Coque is a legendary highlife singer, songwriter, record producer, and lead guitarist. He created a hugely successful blend of traditional Igbo music and contemporary highlife music, recording over 93 albums in his career. 

He apprenticed with with juju stars Sunny Agaga and Jacob Oluwale and featured on Prince Nico Mbarga’s “Sweet Mother” album in 1977. His performances were often backed by his brother Eugene’s Igede International Band. He was married to four wives and fathered twelve children, three of whom are also musicians today.
