During the height of apartheid in South Africa in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, many Nigerian singers and activists stood in solidarity with the people of South Africa and their leader, Nelson Mandela.

Revolutionaries like Sonny Okosun, Majek Fashek, Onyeka Onwenu and Fuji maestro Kollington Ayinla are some of the artists who lent their voices to the struggle through the release of now-classic freedom songs.

While the struggle against apartheid may have ended, the dark days of the policy and the struggle which came with it will never be forgotten, as well as the contributions of Nigeria and its artistry. It is essential to note that Nigeria’s input into the struggle crossed all areas like literature, politics, diplomacy and of course, music.
