To celebrate the company’s 18th Anniversary, popular writer and digital strategist, Adman, Chidi Chikere, took to Twitter to remind us of some of the funniest, swoon-in-envy-at, thought-provoking MTN adverts that Nigeria has ever seen. And truly, the adverts reminded us of more fun and simpler times. *sigh*
- Oh, Jerry!
“Step out onto your balcony, I want to give you a gift that is as priceless as you are.” Who drops that kind of line?! Ground for don scatta! Lmao. Who remembers that MTN Nigeria advert that had young Nigerian guys feeling like the sun was a gift to dash all the babes?
“Step out onto your balcony, I want to give you a gift that is as priceless as you are.”
This MTN ad is one of the greatest ads ever made in Nigeria. I am not interested in any arguments!!! pic.twitter.com/2mvmLXS9qD

- Femi Branch Waltzed With His Babe Across Two Cities:
The second in the thread was this heart-stopping advert. Nigerian actor, Femi Branch, dropped that rich baritone and danced around the room with his partner across two cities, while they gisted on the phone. We go love o!
I just want you people to know that the person that wrote this ad is my hero. Gosh. Love is sweet o. #MTNAT18 pic.twitter.com/xMKuNduVr2

- Which ‘NO’ Don’t You Understand:
Like Chidi, who tweets from the @Chydee account explained, this ad in this time of ‘wokeness’ might have caused wahala. But at that time, we were just gingered by the guy’s ‘motivation’.
Girl: You’re phony.
Guy: Naa, I’m just motivatedIf this ad was released today, MTN would have been dragged, because consistently asking for someone’s contact can be seen as harassment. But back then, this was a killer ad. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/pRkymN2qxW

- Blind Faith:
We all gasped when the lovable producer and musician, Cobhamns Asuquo, walked off the ledge in the 4GLTE MTN advert.
“Let’s just call it blind faith …”
See, nobody could have been better cast for this ad. And I’m not even going to lie, my heart stopped when Cobhams stepped off the ledge. Elite content. Elite elite content. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/lVEWI1AuKp

- Saka Porting:
Let’s not lie to you, Saka made porting to the network a madt thing back then. Even Twitter users in the thread confessed that the advert ‘carried them over to the other side’. Lol!
I’m not sure any Nigerian ad has created the amount of conversations Saka’s porting ad created that year. Hundreds of analysis were made, the move was studied in marketing, advertising and business schools, and people wanted to port, just because. Mad mad ad. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/DYBMdo8UJZ

- Drugs Is A No No:
The recent #MTNASAP advert that had us smiling about the ‘big head’ character and shaking our heads for his friend.
This one is more recent, but I really like it – the #MTNASAP (Anti Substance Abuse something) ad imploring young people to stay away from drugs. Very very important message. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/Tg8ccjvya5

- Tekno Giving Us Sir Shina Peters’ Dance Moves:
Dare we say that this was legendary! How do you think caller tunes spread so quickly?
See, @alhajitekno dancing to Shina Peters, miming one of my best Naija songs – Sound Sultan’s Area and KCee’s Limpopo may just be the best way to promote Caller Tunez. Advertising is sweet abeg 😂😂😂. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/8GDLtDM6Dz

- I Will Be Your Eyes:
Just kill us with love lines already! Who can remember this groom leading his bride through the wedding?
My oga @chukaobi wrote this powerful ad. Legend. *Prostrates* #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/FN3iDlOEWe

- The Glow Up Of Dakore:
Many people found out about the XtraValue proposition because of Dakore Egbuson-Akande’s acting chops in this ad.
The aim of every ad is to make you take positive action for brand yeah? Well, this Dakore ad is the reason I know and use Xtravalue. I mean, with N5k, I get N10k talk time and 7.5GB data monthly. Sweet deal. #MTNAT18 pic.twitter.com/K7TBk76c8K

- This Is Where Football Lives.
We don’t think any country loves football the way we do! It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from or what you do. When it’s football time, nothing else matters. This advert showed that.
Went to Russia for the World Cup. Went to Egypt for the Nation’s Cup. And I can promise you that after music, football is the biggest unifier. #ThisIsNaija showed why we will continue to love the game for centuries! #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/ByBmpQTwBM

- Together In Love?
Raise your hands if you didn’t dance to this song? Try yourself and raise your hand.
Show me an ad with better music than this. I’ll wait. #TogetherInLove
PS: I’m still mad MTN did not make this a full single and release it for us. Beautiful beautiful music. #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/Ye1hIv0bfA

- Life’s Journey Is Dope!
This advert made everybody go aaaaaaaawn from the beginning. It reminded everyone of growth – beautiful growth.
There are so many other MTN ads in my head. But I wan sleep, so I’ll end with this one. The journey from birth to getting your 1st smart phone. Somewhat like @MTNNG’s journey these last 18 years; connecting millions of Nigerians and transforming lives. Happy Anniversary #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/GPeNV7X7aa
