Nigeria’s Super Falcons Can Still Qualify Despite 1-0 Loss Against France

Last night, despite playing great football, Nigeria’s female team, the Super Falcons lost the game to France, 1-0 from a controversial penalty. The girls had held their own for about 75 minutes before committing a penalty that was played by Wendie Renard.

One of Nigeria’s players, Ebere, got a red card during the game before the penalty was taken. After losing the penalty the first time, the referee called for a replay after disallowing the first play because the goalkeeper’s leg was presumably not on the line. Renard took the penalty again and finally scored. Nigerians have been reacting on social media, saying that the play was a racist move by the referee.

However, it appears that the Super Falcons’ journey at the World Cup may not have come to an end as there is still hope that they can qualify. If they had made a point at last night’s game, they would have qualified already but there are other factors still in play as to whether or not they can still qualify.

Although the chances for Super Falcons are now slim, there is still hope for them based on the results of other countries in the other groups. There are only 3 spots left for that to happen but if Scotland beats Argentina or they play a draw, then it may bode well for us.

Also, New Zealand must hold Cameroon and if any of the teams win, it must not be more than three goals. It would also help if Thailand does not concede more than three goals to Chile. And then as a Hail Mary, we should probably start praying that Jamaica should give us a surprise win against Australia.

It’s up to other groups to help, but our fingers are still crossed and we are still hoping that we make it through. South Africa is out of the running for the spot already, the Cameroon team has already lost 2 out of their 3 group matches will be playing their last match on Thursday. Let’s just keep hope alive that at least Nigeria gets to represent Africa in the round of 16.
