Russia 2018: France Grinds Their Way Into The Final With Lone Goal Win Over Belgium

FIFA world cup 1998 host and champions, France have qualified for their third world cup finals in their history. Les Blues needed to hold on a lone goal win for 39 minutes to guarantee their place in the finals at Russia 2018

The great Belgian team who have been impressive throughout the campaign could not find the needed spark required when it mattered most as they struggled to penetrate the French team which looked like they had a game plan to soak in all the pressure the Red Devils had to bring.

Belguim maintained most of the possession during the first half of the game. Both teams had pockets of chances but none of them looked really threating. Eden Hazard got a chance to fire a shot at goal but Hugo Lloris proved to be equal to it as he paired it to safety. The first half ended goalless!

The Belgian team continued to maintain possession of the ball as they did in the first half. But a French corner the 51st minute caught their defence napping. Antoine Griezmann curled in a corner from the right and Samuel Umtiti rose highest to get the header.

France immediately retreated to the back and tried to play the counter. Belguim tried all they could to break through the French defence but they could not. Kylian Mbappe also showed sparks of brilliance and he caused some trouble on the left side of the French Defence.

France will now play the winner of the second semifinal game between England and Croatia in Moscow on July 15 while Belgium will square up against the loser of tomorrow’s game. Regardless of which team they play on Sunday, this golden generation of French footballers lead by former world cup winner Didier Deschamps are already favourites to pick up their second world cup title.
