Segun Bucknor, musician and father of popular media personality Tosyn passes away at 71



At the age of seventy-one, Olusegun Bucknor- he of jazz and highlife and afrobeat and afrosoul breathed his last and ascended into the heavens.

He was one of the pioneers of the early Nigerian music sound, having being an apprentice to highlife legend Roy Chicago. But he carved his own niche in the 60’s and 70’s, leading a highlife/afrobeat band called the Hot Four and later renamed as Segun Bucknor and the Assembly.

Along with contemporaries like Fela and Orlando Julius, he rode the Africanist music wave of the 1970’s to make iconic records like Lord Give Me Soul and I’ll Love You Anyhow.

Born on in 1946, his creative genes did not skip his daughters Tosyn who is an all round entertainer, singer, songwriter and media personality; as well as elder sister Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, one of the earliest event management entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

Segun Bucknor’s death came after a spell of illness. He was accomplished pianist, guitarist and composer whose music genius is sure to be a legacy in years to come.
