Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko is unlikely to stay at the club following the Magpies’ relegation to the second tier last season. The French midfielder has been a long-term target for Arsenal, but according to reports in France, Liverpool have joined the race for his signature.

Sissoko had been largely ignored by French manager Didier Deschamps throughout the group stages as he continued with his 4-3-3 system. However, following N’Golo Kante’s suspension, he tinkered his system to a flexible 4-2-3-1 where Sissoko played on the right-hand side against Iceland. He put up a brilliant performance as France eased into the semi-final, setting up a meeting with World Champions Germany.

The 26-year-old midfielder joined Newcastle from Toulouse in 2013, and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen to retain Sissoko’s services.

According to reports from Marca, Sissoko ‘loves the idea’ of playing for Arsenal, but it remains unclear whether Arsene Wenger will make a move for the Frenchman.

French media outlet Foot Mercato reports that Liverpool are not only interested in him but they’re favourites to beat Arsenal for his signature. Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund are also keen to secure his services but it remains to seen whether any club agrees to meet his €25m valuation.

Do Liverpool really need Sissoko? Well, Sissoko is a versatile midfielder who can play in multiple positions across the midfield – he can play in the central midfield or the wings. He has physical strength, pace and skills to play for any big club. Most importantly, he has the required experience to play in the Premier League and would seamlessly fit into the system easily.
