AGAINST the backdrop of denial of bail to leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the group has petitioned Amnesty International, Human Rights groups as well as other international communities to intervene on his behalf.
The group said denial of Kanu bail by the appellate court was a systematic denial of Ndigbo their rights in an effort to silence agitation for sovereignty.
In a statement signed by IPOB Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Emma Powerful and made available to the Daily Sun, the group said its call for international communities intervention on the matter was to show the world how Buhari and All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration refused to abide by the rule of law.
He said IPOB was calling on world powers and global human rights organisations to prevailed on the Nigerian government to release Kanu who had been in detention since October last year.
“Our members who staged peaceful protests in Aba and Port Harcourt were taken away by the army to their barracks with bullet wounds on them. At Afikpo and Bori camps, every morning, they will bring them out and ask them about missing guns.
“We are calling on Amnesty International, all human rights organisations and international communities to come to our rescue. In Aba, the army is allegedly still holding on to 25 members while in Port Harcourt, 18 persons are still with them over a peaceful protest to release our leader, Kanu,” the statement said.
Powerful, however, maintained that no amount of intimidation, molestation, harassment, and imprisonment would stop the agitation for a Biafra state.
