Carragher, Rodgers Fault Watford’s Over-Dependence On Ighalo, Deeney

Former Liverpool duo; Jamie Carragher and Brendan Rodgers, have voiced concern over Watfords’ over-reliance on Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney for goals following the Hornets' 1-0 defeat at Swansea City on Monday night.

Watford suffered their fourth straight loss against Swansea, who have not had the best of seasons.

According to watfordobserver.co.uk, the duo were speaking as analysts on Sky Sports Monday Night Football and reiterated it was time for the other Watford players to start contributing their own fair share of the goals.

Carragher said: “We spoke all season about how great the front two (Ighalo and Deeney) have been and they have been, but they (Watford) do rely on them too heavily. There’s only been one goal from open play all season, the first goal Watford scored of the season at Goodison (Miguel Layun in the 2-2 draw at Everton) where these (Ighalo and Deeney) haven’t scored or assisted and it just shows how influential they are.

“We see the people underneath, there’s four players with one goal. Nathan Ake’s one goal was a big mistake from the Liverpool goalkeeper and Ben Watson scored direct from a set piece.

"Of course they still count as goals but they’re flukes really, they’re not something you can expect to happen every three or four weeks.

“It is a big worry for them. I think they had two or three shots on target and you mentioned the front two weren’t involved in those. I said at half-time they didn’t have any touches in the box.

Carragher continued: “This is four on the bounce that they’ve lost and the front two aren’t going to be on fire every week. The best strikers in the country aren’t on fire every week so the front two for Watford aren’t going to be able to provide that, so they’re going to need help from midfield players to chip in.

“They’ve lost four on the bounce but if that goes to six, seven without a win and while they’ve been looking that way [up the table], they’ll start looking over their shoulder.”

On his part, Rodgers said: “Especially when you’re a newly-promoted team. The two front boys, you can’t say anything negatively against them. It’s now up to the other boys in the team to provide that ammunition and score the goals, whether it’s the wide players, a bit more contribution from central midfield but the front two have been outstanding.

“You lose four, it can come very quickly in the Premier League because of the level and could become five, six, seven and then the confidence can really go. So it will be important for them to get a positive result, it may not be a win, but just to stop the rot in the next performance.”
